题目：Skilled Labor and Successful Exporters: Evidence from China's Higher Education Expansion in the Late 1990s
摘要：Countries trade according to their comparative advantages. Increases in human capital stock lead countries to export more products produced with more human capital intensive technology. Taking advantage of an exogenous surge in college-educated labor force in China starting in 2002 due to a drastic centrally-devised higher education expansion policy starting in 1999 and using a generalized difference-in-differences framework, this paper finds that firms in more human-capital intensive industries experience a larger increase in export value post-2002 relative to prior years. Results are robust to controlling for other contemporaneous changes in economic environment and policies, particularly China's accession to the WTO and the SOE reforms. The relative export growth comes primarily from increases in export of existing products in existing markets and increases in new markets existing products enter. We provide evidence that increased supply of skilled labor improves product quality in more HC intensive industries, allowing them to export relatively more to richer countries. They also employ more variety and higher quality of imported intermediate inputs to complement skilled labor.
