摘要: The striking increase in female schooling is a revolutionary change occurred in many parts of the world. Previous studies on this topic mostly emphasize the role of market or institution, such as industrial change and compulsory education laws. Parental attitudes and girls’ aspirations were undervalued and sometimes even were dismissed as “unobservable selectivity”. In China, given names may reveal the true expectations of parents and affect girls’ self-aspirations also. We construct three quantitative indices for each name based on its relative frequency by different groups. The regression results show that girls with a more educated, urban, male-sounding name are more likely to attend junior high school. On the other side, I find negative effects of name indices on the number of younger siblings, which is consistent with the quantity-quality theory. These findings suggest that the increase in female school participation is partially caused by the change in parents’ attitudes. The effects of given name on education still exist with the subsample of households who have two or more daughters, after the household-level fixed effects are included in regressions.
