Abstract
We explore the presence of academic independent directors in Chinese listed firms. Specifically, we study determinants of the appointment of academics, those who are professionally trained and presently working for an education or research institution, as independent director. Drawing on the corporate governance literature, we examine organizational factors that are related to the managerial monitoring and resource provision roles of independent director. We further investigate the performance impact of the appointment of academic independent directors. We test our model using data of Chinese listed firms from 2008 to 2015. Our study contributes important insights to the understanding of board of directors in an emerging market.
Bio
Dr. Wei Yang is the Lecturer in Strategy at the Adam Smith Business School of University of Glasgow, U.K. She received her PhD in International Management from the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany. Previously, she held posts at Nankai University and China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), and visiting posts at Columbia University, U.S.A and University of Leeds, U.K. Her research centers on competitive strategy and corporate governance such as competitive dynamics and joint venture board of directors. Wei Yang has published in renowned academic journals such as International Business Review and Journal of Business Research and won the Academy of Management (BPS division) Best Paper Prize.
