摘要:While the biological links between early-life malnutrition and late-life health are well established, relatively little is known about the role of non-biological pathways through which the causal effect may operate. If an episode of hunger not only affects individuals’ health trajectories instantaneously during “critical periods” early in life, but also lead to health-related motivational and behavioral changes for all future periods, then its health impacts will be better measured–and the efforts to fight childhood hunger will be better targeted–if we take a broader perspective that includes the entire life cycle. This paper aims to establish the role of health perception and behavior change as a pathway between early-life shocks and long-term health outcomes by applying the vignette methodology on self-reported health of Chinese middle-aged and older individuals and by examining their health-related behaviors late in life. We show that hunger exposure early in life makes individuals better adapted to future health threats by leading them to adopt a more vigilant attitude towards threat-related health information. As a result, given the same level of underlying health, those with hunger experience in the past perceive it as worse. Regarding changes in health behavior, while we do find more engagement in self-care and smoking cessation among those with early-life exposure to hunger, their increased attention to health is not reflected in other dimensions of health-promoting behaviors, such as formal medical care utilization, regular physical activity and routine physical examination.
