Abstract
A technology catch-up strategy based on independent technology development is argued to be viable for latecomer firms to succeed. However, we found a counter example - Xiaomi, a Chinese smartphone company, successfully caught up with global competitors and became a market leader without developing core technologies independently. To extend our understanding on latecomer strategies, we conduct a longitudinal case study on Xiaomi, which relies heavily on other players in the wider ecosystem well beyond its supply chain. Our findings reveal latecomer firms’ “market catch-up strategy”, and the conditions required to develop competitive advantages through creating and adapting innovation ecosystems. Further, we offer an “ecosystem-as-evolution” perspective – elaborating the process of how focal firms can repeatedly and cumulatively create value over time by leveraging ecosystem resources.
