How Diversification of Charitable Activities Promotes Donation
Abstract
We show that geographic diversification of charitable activities promotes donation intention as well as real donation. After excluding the possibilities that geographic diversification increases donors’ perceived impact and perceived contribution, we further demonstrate that the observed effect is only evident when individuals focus on themselves (vs. others), indicating a selfish motive behind the effect.
About the Speaker
Qian Xu is an Associate Professor of Marketing at the School of Management, Fudan University. She received her PhD in Marketing and Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Fudan University. Prior to joining Fudan University, she worked as a postdoctoral research associate at the School of Business, the University of Hong Kong. Qian’s research interests cover consumer motivation, social support, and charitable behaviors. Her research has been published in the Journal of Marketing Research, the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and Journal of Consumer Psychology.
