Title: Digitalization: Challenges for the Social Market Economy
Abstract:The digital market economy is turning existing structures upside down. Data is becoming increasingly important, economic activity has shifted towards online platforms and large digital firms dominate markets more and more. The talk gives an overview of how digitalization challenges the social market economy, which is Germany’s market-based economic model for now almost 70 years. The presentation focuses on how digitalization has made changes in German and European competition policy necessary in order to address abuse of market power and to cope with new challenges for merger control within the digital economy. Insights from the current discussion about competition policy and regulation in Germany and Europe will be given.
Speaker:Professor Achim Wambach, PhD, has been President of the ZEW – Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research in Mannheim, Germany, since April 2016. Furthermore, he is Professor of Economics at the University of Mannheim. Achim Wambach is chairman of the German Monopolies Commission since March 2016, which advises the German government in the fields of competition policy and regulation. In September 2018 he was appointed Co-Chairman of the commission “Competition Law 4.0” of the German Federal Government, which is asked to make recommendations for European competition policy. Achim Wambach obtained a PhD in Physics at the University of Oxford and a Master of Science in Economics at the London School of Economics. He completed his habilitation thesis in economics at the University of Munich. His fields of interest include market design and competition policy.
