摘要: This paper examines the role of globalization on firm reorganization. We study the effects of offshoring on firm importing and domestic activities such as production and innovation. Unique survey data provide a direct measure of offshoring and its links to firms’ trading decisions. Rather than hollowing out their domestic production, offshoring firms are likely to produce and import the same products, even after offshoring begins. A new measure of offshoring based on a firm’s imports of its domestically produced goods allows the separation of imports into competing flows and those under its control. The paper exploits these differences to identify the impact of offshoring on firms’ decisions to reallocate labor from production work to technology and innovation-related occupations. This reallocation of workers is accompanied by increases in offshoring firms’ product development and R&D spending. Firm reorganization reveals a new channel through which offshoring affects innovation, and may ultimately affect economic performance and growth. This paper is joint with Andrew Bernard, Teresa Fort and Frederic Warzynski.
主讲人:Valerie Smeets is Professor in Department of Economics and Business Economics, Aarhus University. She received the Ph.D. in economics from Université Libre de Bruxelle. Her main research interests are International Trade, Industrial Organization, Organizational Economics, Personnel Economics, Applied Microeconomics. Her papers are published in Journal of Labor Economics, Journal of International Economics and International Economic Review, etc.
